Your Guide to Building a Strong LinkedIn Profile What should you include and what should  you leave out on  your LinkedIn profile?  There are some must-haves (name, photo, description) and some big no-nos (overused buzzwords). You should make 2015 a brand you  year, following the below  pointers  on what to include in your LinkedIn profile.  Last year we covered  the  most overused buzzwords by recruiters. Remember, sometimes using buzzwords are more of a hinderance than a plus to your LinkedIn profile! Takeaways: Remember that a strong profile photo is essential, as a profile with a photo is 14 times more likely to be viewed than without one! Its important to consider: What does your profile photo say about you? Does it convey you as friendly and approachable? Avoid generic buzzwords in your summary or throughout your experience. Focus on your achievements to truly personalise your profile! Recommendations are a great addition to your LinkedIn account, acting as a strong reference for all of your profile viewers to see! Ask those kindly providing a recommendation to give specific examples of your accomplishments (such as projects you collaborated on) to further make your  profile unique. Be sure to avoid the global top 10 buzzwords including motivated, passionate, creative and driven! Are you a buzzword hoarder? Dont rely on a thesaurus to sidestep buzzwords, instead use  real-life  examples on how youre a motivated professional. Finding an Engineering Graduate Job with David Brown Gear Systems Ltd. This is an interview, I asked for, with Thato. Thato and I did our B.Eng  (with industry) together. After graduation, he has started working with David Brown, carrying on from the year-in-industry  placement he did there. Apart from being  a good mate, the other reason for this interview is that Thato was one of the very  very few guys who stuck to getting an internship and did a lot of running around  to get one.  I am just glad he has taken the time out to give me this interview. CareerGeek (Interviewer): So, Thato, usual question, how did you get a job with David Brown? Thato:  I applied for internships in 2009 through YINI organization. They called me for a phone interview and then I was called for a final interview. We had a group discussion, individual presentation, and an individual interview. I was successful and got the internship and when I finished my internship, the company decided to offer me a graduate job. CareerGeek: Thats cool, so you got the job after judging your performance at the internship. I assume YINI was quite helpful? Thato:  I registered with YINI when I was looking for an internship. So yes, it was useful because they were able to find me companies that were interested in my field. Careergeek: Yeah they are quite good at Science and Engineering placements. (Read more about YINI in my other post). So, how was your interview and what made you click? Thato:  Its how I answered the questions they were asking me. I was clear and to the point. When I needed to elaborate more, I took my time. Being realistic is one of the best things to do when answering questions and saying the same thing you wrote on your CV. When asked what changes you will bring to the company, make sure you have done good research and your answers should be relevant to what the company does. CareerGeek: Good information, I often find some students who lack in their background research. Before we finish, what advice would you give to those students looking for an internship or year-in-industry placement? Thato:  Keep applying and give your best for each and every interview you go to. Remember, to be chosen you need to stand out of the crowd. The interview is about selling yourself to a company, so put yourself in the best position for them not to turn you down. It all starts from you CV and what kind of a person you are. Are You Ready to Lead

Are You Ready to Lead In the ever-evolving new world of work, we will all be leaders. This could be a leader of others or a leader of ourselves. What are you doing to brush up on your leadership skills today? Heres one easy solution: Managing with a Conscience (2nd edition) by Frank Sonnenberg In the turbulent, frenetic, dog-eat-dog times of the past few decades, many believed that the only way to achieve success was to be unscrupulous. Acting like slumlords, corporations let their assets deteriorate by exploiting customers, mistreating employees, and squeezing suppliers. What they overlooked, however, was that their obsession with short-term results significantly damaged their company’s long-term performance as well as its competitiveness. Today, it is more critical than ever to put an end to these short-sighted tactics. I dont remember how or when I first met Frank Sonnenberg (@FSonnenberg) but for the past year hes produced some wonderfully thoughtful posts which Ive shared on Twitter.   Frank asked if I would review the newest edition of his book and I gladly accepted.   Please note, I am a slow reader and confess I havent read every page.   However, what I have read is engaging and right on track in my estimation. In order to write this review, I started reading Chapter 9:   Networking.   Sonnenberg captures the importance of this activity as a business growth strategy as well as a career growth strategy.   For anyone new to the concept of networking, this is a clearly written explanation of how and why! I decided I should read more and was intrigued by the title of the first chapter:   If A Tree Falls In the ForestCompeting in the New Age of Intangibles. Sonnenberg describes (with facts and data) the new, flat world of organizations.   He lists a side-by-side comparison of The Industrial Age Thought Processes versus the Information Age Thought Processes which highlights many of the key differences.   But of course, the chapter doesnt end there. Sonnenberg sets the tone with nine critical success factors for competing in the 21st century (which coincide with his nine chapters). As I mentioned in the beginning, you may not aspire to be a leader, but you will be asked to be one anyway. Franks book helps you understand the positive, healthy behaviors of a successful company.   The knowledge and understanding of these theories and best practices will absolutely benefit any one who reads it- from a new college graduate to a Boomer closing in on retirement. What I loved so much about Franks book is that it addresses the ethical treatment of   employees. In other words, it is pointing out that todays successful businesses can no longer use power, control, fear and other demeaning methods to engage their workers.   His book is about building a trusting and high performing culture in the workplace where employees are seen as key contributors, not cogs. It is refreshing and uplifting and points out that we have a long way to go!   Each of us can help drive and implement these changes.   I encourage you to think about Franks messages and find a way to help spread the word and incorporate these newer principles.
